2011 EERI Annual Meeting: Earthquakes without Borders
Annual Meeting Program - Date: February 9-12

The meeting, with the theme “Earthquakes without Borders,” was held February 9-12, 2011 at the Hyatt Regency La Jolla, just north of San Diego, California. La Jolla is affectionately known as “the jewel” of the Pacific shoreline, surrounded on three sides by the sea and backed by the steep slopes of Mt. Soledad. La Jolla has a Mediterranean feel and enjoys a unique microclimate, with February daytime temperatures averaging in the 60s.
Session topics: - the extent and effects of earthquakes on the built environment
- To kick off the meeting, a panel discussion will address cross-border issues based on recent experiences with the El Mayor-Cucapah earthquake and the San Diego wildfires, as well as border problems after 9/11, encompassing
- seismic risk
- collaborative researchneeds
- policy and emergency response plans for an earthquakes in the region of southern California and Baja California
- methods to mitigate the region’s tsunami risk
- international EERI collaboration
- reducing the gap between research and practice
- current issues in the practice of earthquake engineering.
- interpretation, selection, and modification of strong motion records
- lessons learned from the major earthquakes of 2010
- parallel sessions on structural engineering and geotechnical engineering, covering, respectively:
- the latest innovations in structural engineering
- the effectiveness of Vs30 as a parameter for site characterization
Post-Banquet Casino Night: Friday came to a rousing conclusion with a post-banquet Casino Night. Not only did it offer a high-intensity networking and social opportunity for all, it also helped raise money for local student organizations at UCSD and SDSU.
Field trips, Saturday, 2-12-11, 2:45–5:00 pm: - University of California San Diego Englekirk Center Experimental Facilities:
A one-of-a-kind worldwide resource, the center houses the NEES@UCSD large high-performance outdoor shake table, a soil-foundation-structure interaction facility that includes a large laminar soil shear box and a refillable soil pit, and a blast simulator. - Balboa Parkis San Diego’s most beloved open space and architectural showcase. Onthis 90-minute walking tour, you will (1) learn how a barren mesa was transformed into the largest urban cultural park in America, with world-class regional architecture and horticulture; and (2) visit the sites of the 1915 and 1935 international expositions, now historical landmark districts.
