At 10:44 AM Pacific Time this morning (December 5, 2024) a M7.0 earthquake struck offshore Cape Mendocino, California, approximately 75 km southwest of epicenter of the December 20, 2022 M6.4 Ferndale earthquake. The National Tsunami Warning Center issued a tsunami warning for the coastal areas from Davenport, California to the border of Douglas and Line counties in Oregon, but the warning was canceled less than an hour later. There reports of non-structural impacts in Humboldt County, including disruption to electricity and water lifelines, and of some structural damage to buildings in the Eel River Valley area. No casualties have been reported at this time.
