EERI’s Learning From Earthquakes (LFE) program is currently monitoring the impacts of the destructive M7.7 earthquake that struck near Mandalay, Myanmar (Burma) at 12:50 PM local time (06:20 UTC) on March 28, 2025. A M6.4 aftershock occurred about 12 minutes later. According to initial media coverage, the earthquake caused widespread shaking felt throughout much of Myanmar and Thailand and in the Yunnan and Sichuan provinces of China. There have been at least 2,700 fatalities and many injuries. Significant building damage, including multiple structure collapses, has occurred in a number of cities including Mandalay, Naypyidaw, and Bangkok. There are also reports of widespread damage to infrastructure, including bridges, roads, airports, and hospitals. The EERI community extends its sympathy to the victims as rescue and relief work continues.
EERI is evaluating the situation and consulting with local colleagues and experts to determine how LFE should respond. More information will be shared here and on the LFE website in the future.
