EERI’s Learning From Earthquakes (LFE) program is monitoring the impacts of the M6.3 earthquake that struck central Colombia yesterday at 8:08 AM local time (13:08 UTC). The epicenter was northeast of the city of Paratebueno, and shaking was felt both in the immediate area and as far as the capital, Bogota, 105 miles away. According to initial media coverage, the earthquake caused no serious casualties, but damage to buildings has been reported in Paratebueno and surrounding villages. The EERI community extends its sympathy to those affected.
EERI is currently evaluating the situation and reaching out to partner organizations and colleagues in the region. The LFE Executive Committee met today and is exploring options for collaboration with local partners who may be planning to conduct reconnaissance, although no LFE reconnaissance team is currently envisioned.
