exposure models at the block level for the MNRS.

Reyes et al. present a residential building exposure model developed for 83 prioritized municipalities in Colombia as part of the National Seismic Risk Model (MNRS), a multi-year collaboration coordinated by the Colombian Geological Survey involving 13 universities and more than 150 contributors. The model provides block-level data on building location, structural typology, occupancy, and replacement cost, covering approximately 3.9 million buildings and 26 million residents—roughly half the national population. The methodology integrates cadastral records, the 2018 National Population and Housing Census, and more than 324,000 visual inspections conducted through a Street View–based tool, with stratified random sampling applied within homogeneous zones to ensure representative typology distributions. A taxonomy specific to Colombian construction practices is paired with regionally adjusted replacement costs that account for material prices, freight, and socioeconomic strata. The results highlight the dominance of masonry construction, which accounts for 61–87% of buildings across municipalities, with unreinforced clay masonry the single most prevalent typology—a finding with direct implications for retrofit prioritization and risk reduction policy.

The exposure data are publicly available through DesignSafe, supporting reproducibility and adaptation by other research groups. The paper is part of Earthquake Spectra’s in-development National Seismic Risk Model of Colombia Special Collection, and offers a transferable framework for other countries developing national-scale exposure inventories.
