EERI Has Two Post Graduation Internship Positions Open

The Earthquake Engineering Research Institute (EERI) has two internship positions available for recent college graduates who are interested in gaining valuable professional experience while supporting the Institute’s mission to reduce the risks from earthquakes. These positions begin June 1, 2013.

The three-to-six month internships offer engagement in a number of interesting EERI projects including the World Housing Encyclopedia, the Concrete Coalition, the Learning from Earthquakes Program, the California Clearinghouse, and the Confined Masonry Network. In addition, interns will help with other EERI programs such as technical seminars, meetings and support for regional and student chapters. Tasks are varied, although day-to-day work focuses on supporting EERI projects through research, website development and maintenance, and data analysis. Interns are also currently engaged in development of short videos for EERI projects.

Desired education and background include a bachelor’s degree in engineering, science, architecture or public policy, some familiarity with issues in earthquake risk reduction, proficiency in Excel and WORD, some knowledge of website development and maintenance or demonstrated willingness to learn, a flexible attitude towards work, curiosity, and strong interpersonal skills. Ability to work independently and to take initiative a must. Rudimentary video-making skills are also desirable. Interns need to work in the EERI office, which means living in the Bay Area. (No moving or housing support provided). EERI interns are provided monthly stipends ($1,200/month).

EERI Post Graduation internships are a great way to gain valuable professional experience, to be involved in meaningful projects related to seismic safety and risk reduction, and to make connections with EERI’s multi-disciplinary professional community. The EERI office is conveniently located in downtown Oakland, close to BART and the freeway.

Preference is given to EERI members. Applications should be uploaded by May 6th. In-person interviews will be conducted the weeks of May 13th and 20th. The positions begin June 1st, although it may be possible to arrange an earlier start date.  EERI would like a commitment of at least three months. New internship positions become available every four to eight months.
